Eastern Purchases Building on New Bedford Waterfront
June 2005 - Eastern Fisheries, the world's largest scallop company,
recently completed the acquisition of a third waterfront location in
the port of New Bedford, MA. With this purchase, Eastern Fisheries
gains an additional 47,000 square feet of unloading, processing and
cold storage space. Of equal importance, Eastern also gains 200 feet
of docking space which the company will use for its recently expanded
fleet of scallop fishing vessels.
The new building, which is adjacent to Eastern's existing corporate
offices and primary processing facility, is undergoing significant
renovation. In early 2006, Eastern plans to move all of its frozen
scallop processing and sales and administrative offices to the new
location.
Eastern Fisheries is a vertically integrated company with a fleet of
twenty-one scallop fishing vessels, 110,000 square feet of processing
and cold storage space in three facilities, and more than 150
employees. The company handles approximately 20 million pounds of scallops each year, roughly 20% of the total U.S. consumption.
